Booking Process

If you are entering into the industry with no prior experience, then the most recommended entry level course is LANTRA NHSS (National Highways Sector Schemes) 12 TTMBC course (Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course). Further details for the course, as well as upcoming classes to book, are on the unit page under LANTRA training.

To book onto a course, you will need to make an account with us. This will be either a Sole Trader Account or a Business Account (FAQ for which you should create is also available). After this, please set up your 'associates', which are the learners that you would like to add to courses.

A course can then be selected via 'Make a Booking', where you will be able to search for the type of course you wish to book.

Alternatively, you can select to see available dates for a specific course or unit, from that unit's specific page.

Whilst the qualifications we deliver are highly respected and recognised throughout the UK, we would not be able to directly provide you with work in the industry, nor with references for a potential employer. We can provide a list of employers and agencies for those that are hiring in the local area upon request, for those that have completed training with us.

Training costs vary by Awarding Body, which unit is required, if the candidate(s) would be completing the training as initial or as a reassessment, and the number of candidates to attend.

For more information on specific unit prices, please check the unit page for available bookings, or contact us for a quote if none are showing or you require a bespoke course.

We can accept candidates ages 16 and 17 onto our training courses, though you will need to have a parent/guardian complete our GDPR Consent Form. If you are younger than 16, then you would not be eligible for training.

Please ask a member of our staff to provide you with one if you are considering booking.

To book a course for a date that is not one of our open course dates, contact us directly and the training team will be able to arrange the booking with you, and provide a quote for the training.

The two types of qualification are governed by two different organisations. Which type of qualification you will need for your specific works depends on your local council and highways authority, however a quick guide would be;

  • If you perform infrequent Traffic Management (e.g. Utilities engineer, Tree Surgeon, Street Cleaner), then Street Works training may be all you need. This covers low speed local authority roads, 60mph single carriageways and 40mph dual carriageways as a maximum, with the one-day SLG course.
  • If you perform frequent Traffic Management, then LANTRA training, starting with the TTMBC introductory course, would be the generally preferred option. LANTRA training would also be required for working on high-speed roads, those that are above 60mph.

To be sure it is best to check with the local authorities/your manager before you start work.

LANTRA NHSS qualifications and Street Works qualifications do not interact in any way, and you cannot use a qualification in one to act as a prerequisite on the other, even if similar things are discussed in those units.

You can be qualified in Temporary Traffic Management in both Street Works and LANTRA NHSS.

Chapter 8 refers to the a specific section of the Traffic Signs Manual, published by the Department for Transport. Chapter 8 provides codes of practice for temporary signing, lighting and guarding.

As such, both LANTRA 12A/B/C/D and Street Works Signing, Lighting and Guarding courses fulfil the needs for Chapter 8 training.

Some employers and auditors may request a CSCS card for traffic management. LANTRA NHSS cards and e-cards are affiliated with CSCS and the CSCS logo is included on LANTRA NHSS cards, so no further testing would be required after taking a LANTRA course.

Both Street Works and LANTRA NHSS have health and safety as an integral part of the assessment criteria, and no further H&S qualification would be necessary.

Many of our courses assume zero prior knowledge for candidates. Our most popular courses are LANTRA NHSS TTMBC and Street Works O1 - Signing, Lighting and Guarding.

These courses provide an excellent foundation for any beginner, as they need no background in the industry at all to start, and pass, the training.

Course Questions

Depending on if your course features a practical element for the training, you may be required to bring PPE to the course. Details for which will be sent alongside any booking information on time of booking.

For any LANTRA assessments, candidates should bring equipment suitable for the type of assessment being carried out.

Candidates should bring a form of identification (passport, driver's licence) and a copy of their current card (either LANTRA or Street Works) to any training or assessment.

We do not typically provide PPE to learners, and you are required to bring all items listed in the PPE/Equipment guidelines document provided alongside your booking confirmation.

We do not sell or order PPE for candidates, the exception being escape sets and harness equipment for Confined Spaces practical assessment at our premises; these we order in for the candidates.

At current we do not offer an online proctored training option, all our training takes place from our premises, or we can conduct training (if suitable) from a premises of your choosing.

Most courses come with proof of  training, be it a physical certificate/skills card, or an electronic certificate/card. LANTRA courses also have a yellow counterpart form that is produced to learners at the end of the course, which serves as a temporary proof of training/assessment for 6 months.

Should you require additional short-term proof of training or assessment, we can provide a Letter of Confirmation as a service.

Please note, we can only offer proof of training to you if you are the learner who completed the training, or if you are in a managerial role/clerical role within the organisation who made the booking (e.g. HR, Learning Coordinator, Administrator).

Many companies will let you start work if you have proof of having completed training.

For LANTRA, the minimum you need is just the TTMBC unit to start working under supervision, and many companies and agencies will allow the use of the yellow counterpart form as evidence of training completion.

Should you have any issues in evidencing your training, please do contact us.

For all training that we provide, all assessment results are shared with the candidate at time of assessment completion, so candidates will know if they have passed or failed same-day.

Any courses ran at our premises will have tea and biscuits available, but you would have to bring your own lunch.

The nature of the courses does mean that we require a minimum number of candidates to book the course to run. The reason for this is to make the training financially viable, and to promote a good learning environment.

Should we need to cancel a booked date for any reason we will provide as much notice as possible, and provide alternative course options or a refund.

Street Works Questions

For units SLG (O1 or S1) and LA, there are no needed prior qualifications.

In order to complete units O2-O8 or S2-S7, then candidates will need to hold unit LA, and also unit O1 for O2-O8, or unit S1 for S2-S7. These can be completed at the same time as the further units.

E.g. A candidate with O1 can book operatives training to complete LA, O2-O5.

Candidates who take a NRSWA course have 6 weeks to complete paperwork and both the test and practical examination. Most of the time this will be completed same-day, however candidates may need to reattend within this 6 week period if there are factors that prevent the course from being completed, or if there were any elements not successfully passed during the first training instance.

A record of evidence of training completed will be made, but after six weeks have passed this evidence will be voided.

All Street Works qualifications last for five years, at which point they should be reassessed to renew their validity.

The skills card(s) that you receive for completing Street Works training will be one of three types;

  • Yellow - Operatives units only
  • Blue - Supervisors units only (This type of card CANNOT be used in the installation of SLG or in carrying out works. This is only for supervision of the described works.
  • White - Holds both Operatives and Supervisors units. Whilst the holder of the card is qualified to complete operative and supervisor work, they may only occupy one of these roles at a time. E.g. the holder may not supervise the installation of SLG equipment whilst also installing the equipment.

Please primarily contact the organisation who made the booking, as in the majority of cases we are required to send any materials from training courses to the bill payer. If you are the bill payer, please contact us if you are having any issues in receiving any materials from your training. The sooner the better!

We make an application to CABWI for your certificate in the first instance, then we apply to Street Works for your SWQR card after a brief window to allow for information to be passed between the bodies.

The expected turnaround for materials, assuming no delays (sometimes we may require a confirmation of information, or additional information from you), is 1-2 weeks for certificate(s) and 4-8 weeks for SWQR cards, based on Street Works' processing times.

Street Works assessment consists of an end of unit multiple-choice written test, with a pass grade of 16 marks out of 20 (80%), and a practical assessment under the watch of our assessor.

If you have lost your SWQR card, then you will have to order a new one from Street Works directly. You will have to call them at 0345 270 2720.

Please note that you will need to provide them with your full name and date of birth before being able to secure a replacement card.

We would need to book two separate courses for this training, as, per our awarding body guidelines, we cannot assess for Supervisor and operative on the same course.

Should you require to complete both training, we would recommend starting from the Operatives perspective.

LANTRA Questions

Learning within LANTRA NHSS almost always starts with the TTMBC unit (Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course). The prerequisites to be able to book learning are as such;

  • 12 TTMBC - no prior training needed.
  • 12D T1(M1) - current TTMBC unit needed.
  • 12D T2 class - current T1(M1) unit needed.
  • 12D T3 class - current T2 or M2 unit needed.
  • 12D T4 class - current T2 or M2 unit needed.
  • 12D T5 class - current T2 or M2 unit needed.
  • 12D T6(M6) - current T2 or M2 unit needed.
  • 12D T7(M7) - no prior training needed.
  • 12AB general operative class - current TTMBC unit needed, needs to have held the unit for minimum 3 months.
  • 12AB assessment - current 12AB general operative unit needed.
  • 12D assessment - to achieve M2 need current T2 unit. To achieve M3/4/5, current classroom unit needed and current M1/M2 skill.
  • 12 Gate Person/Airlock Installer-Operator - current TTMBC or higher unit (e.g. 12D T1) needed.

Candidates can take the training in sequence and still be valid (e.g. candidate can be booked onto TTMBC/T1/T2 training bundle over 1.5 days).

All LANTRA classroom courses are pass-on-the-day. If for whatever reason training is not completed on the day of the course, training is to be sat as initial.

For all assessment modules M2/3/4/5 and 12AB, there is a 2-year time period from the start of assessment to assessment completion in which we can collect evidence. Any evidence that is older than 2 years cannot be used in assessing learner competency and will be voided.

LANTRA qualifications come in a few varieties;

  • TTMBC - 6 month duration
  • 12D T1/T2, T3, T4, T5, 12AB general operative (trainee), Gate Person/Airlock Installer-Operator - 2 year duration
  • 12D M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, 12AB general operative (skilled worker) - 5 year duration

LANTRA provide skills cards to learners directly via their candidate portal.

Learners will be sent a link to access this portal from LANTRA directly, to the email that they list on their registration form. If an email is not added, the card is raised regardless and record added to LANTRA's register, but an email will need to be provided to LANTRA in order for a candidate to receive the portal link to download that card.

Physical cards can still be printed on request, but there would be an increased admin fee for a physical LANTRA card.

Please contact us if you are having any issues in receiving any materials from your training. The sooner the better!

The expected turnaround for materials, assuming no delays (sometimes we may require a confirmation of information, or additional information from you), is 2-4 weeks, based on LANTRA's processing times.

LANTRA classroom training units are all assessed by an end of module test. These do differ from unit to unit in their length and intensity, but the pass mark is 75% across all LANTRA classes.

T2, T3, T4, T5 and 12AB classrooms all award skills at the 'trainee' level. Each also have practical assessments required to obtain the 'skilled worker' version of that unit (M2, M3, M4, M5 and 12AB). Each unit has a different number of assessments required, under different assessment conditions. You can see each unit's individual page to see specific details.

You can check your own LANTRA card via your LANTRA learner portal.

If you wish to check on another person's LANTRA card, the best place to do so would be at the LANTRA Card Checker. Similar services do exist, however, the LANTRA-own checker would be the one we recommend for the accuracy, as it is live updated.

All you would need to do is type in your name and LANTRA card number (DoB optional) and a list of your current skills will show up on the webpage.

Reassessment Questions

We would recommend booking a reassessment course within 6 months of the expiry on your skills. Any time remaining on those skills will be added to the time added for reassessing.

You have 5 years grace period after the skills on the card expires to complete a reassessment for that unit. Depending on how long has passed since your last training, you may wish to take refresher training for the unit.

We would recommend booking a reassessment course within 6 months of the expiry on your skills. Any time remaining on those skills will be added to the time added for reassessing.

LANTRA will be removing the grace period for skills, starting 1st April 2026. Please check your skills card to make sure that you are keeping your skills in date!
